----------
Sophia McClain has a goiter which was very visible in her photographs. Winifred Crowder McClain told me that when Sophie became pregnant she must have had problems with the goiter to the extent that she had to have thyroidectomy in August 1926 . Her health was not very good and when the baby (Mary Josepha Stella) was born in March of 1927 her condition worsened. Sophie eventually contracted double pneumonia and died in April 1927 just six weeks after having Mary.
----------
Winifred Crowder McClain told me that all four daughters of the McClains had to have their goiters removed. Perhaps more unusual is the fact that William McClain likewise died at Ann Arbor from Hyperthyroidism in 1933.
----------
According to Pete Everson, Sofie died during childbirth. He remembers two McClain girls coming to stay with them for quite a while. He thought that they may have been older that he, but about the age of Mildred. He could not remember their names . He said that the McClains wanted Christ and Iona to raise the baby, but they declined. There is a photo of the Everson children with two additional girls who may be the McClain girls.
